My Recipe Book

Published by laurel at 4:06 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

My tween had to make a book of family recipes last year as part of a study about family heritage.  We decided to make a recipe lapbook simply titled, “My Recipe Book”.  If you are interested in lapbooking, you can find lots of valuable information  on this site:  http://www.homeschoolhelperonline.com/lapbooks.htm.

My daughter and I looked through my recipe box, and found recipes that we really love, with a focus on recipes that were handed down to me from my own Mama. A few of the recipes that Mama gave me, were handed to her by her own Mama.  After we gathered our family recipes, we cut some new ones out of magazines, and cut out picutures of food that could be used to decorate the outside of the lapbook.  After all of our materials were gathered, we started to assemble the lapbook.  The magazine cutouts were arranged creatively to decorate the outside cover of the book, and the recipes were arranged neatly inside the book using techniques described on the website that I posted above.

Now, my daughter has a nice, keepsake book that she made herself with the recipes that are important to our family, and a few new ones that might become important to her when she grows up and starts her family.  The cost of this project was approximately 25 cents, by figuring in the costs of the folder used to make the lapbook, and the fact that the other materiels came from items that would normally have been thrown away.  Glue and tape is not free, but since we already had those items around the house, I did not figure them in to the cost of the actual project.

Skills Used For This Project:

1. Reading (must read the recipes in order to choose them).

2. Art (cutting, pasting and arranging the pictures and recipes).

3. math (recipes are all about fractions and proportions).

4. social studies (learning about family traditions in regards to food).

Have a Great Day!
